For race fans Nismo represents in Japan a national pride and the acronym stands for Nissan Motorsports; in Italy and in Europe in general, it has a big success especially among young people (and very young people) who spend their days playing with the Playstation.

We think it is appropriate to talk about a model like the Juke (so original and unconventional), to let it wear for the first time (also in the old continent) the livery of the prestigious sports brand which has this philosophy: “Innovation & Excitement for everyone”.

The idea is to come out with a very “peppery” car but, at the same time, not too extreme, accessible to everyone at an interesting price; not too bad as investment in this “Mini-Suv” which is a “in the round” car and perfect for a young audience.

That’s why Investo Magazine has decided to test drive the Juke Nismo 1,6 DIG-T 4WD, 200 HP.

The Nismo technicians started from the Juke Tekna 1,6 liters direct fuel injection ( look at the traffic around you and you will see a lot of these car; 290000 cars sold in Europe in 2010) to transform this successful crossover into a little “bomb”, also full of personality, without compromising the qualities that have made it a queen of the everyday use.

If the Nissan Juke is already a good topic of discussion when parked in the street, imagine the new Nismo which is more exclusive and stands out from the crowd.

The prominent upper edge of the large lower grille features a red pinstripe on “Pearl White” (the only color available), which drops dramatically to curve around the smaller vents and continues all the way to the front wheel arches. Compared to the standard Nissan JUKE, the most obvious visual change is to the front fascia and grille, which have been modified to better control airflow to the engine. The unique front end features a lower and more aggressive design. JUKE’s familiar integrated fog lights have been replaced by thin-strip LED accent lights (very GT-R), positioned at the top edge of small vents to the side of the larger grille.

Also part of the stunning JUKE NISMO exterior appearance are the unique 18-inch lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels (finished in dark anthracite), which you will keep on even during winter time as, besides being beautiful, they are good for snow chains.

The front seats have been redesigned to offer additional lateral support and they are very comfortable also for the taller ones. Trimmed in suede, they sport vibrant red stitching. steering wheel stitching. The steering wheel is fantastic: it is finished in Alcantara® and leather. The tactile steering wheel now includes a red marker to indicate the top dead center: too bad it can be adjusted only in height. Red is also used as a background to the tachometer, another feature derived directly from racing, and all different Nismo badges distributed on the console which still remain the Tekna one. Nissan Navigation System (with 5-inch color touch screen display and the new Google navigation system “Send to Car” which allows to download the itineraries planned on your home PC) works well even if the design is a little bit dated, especially in a model of such prestigious brand.

It is fun to drive and the high center of gravity does not influences the dynamic.

Suspension  performance and roll control are good and the drive is comfortable ( the down force has increased by 37%).

The automatic transmission (7-speed CVT) is fast even if it is not always easy to insert (especially in “Auto” mode) which allows fast shifting with no distribution at higher regimes; this is way the introduction of paddles on the wheel, expected in the new Nismo RS.

Definitely better the “Sport” version, where the sound is improving and it introduces to a “rhythmic” shifting that simulates manual shifting in the red zone; the gear shift stick is a little bit uncomfortable.

A short drive is enough to understand that the car performs well also on mixed terrain and, if necessary, you can take advantage of the responsive steering and four-wheel drive (fixed or automatic insertion, but on dry you can also select the 2WD mode) to step on the gas and get some help when needed. Of course the car is heavy so, during heavy breaking (especially close to narrow turns and downhill roads) the back of car might feel lighter..

A negative note, fuel consumption; it is true that performances and aggressiveness cannot match with low cost consumption, but this is not an extreme sport car. Dispite what the production house states, the car has a fuel consumption figure not less of 12l/100km, regardless the yellow stars on the lower display (D-Mode), when the speed become more eco-friendly and less expensive.

The digital universe has no secrets for Nismo, as the Nissan engineers are developing a new app that can offer a revolutionary experience to Juke’s customers, filling the gap between the futuristic racing features of the Nissan GT-R and the technology desires of the average buyer; the app will connect the driver iPad with the the car’s on-board computer (via Bluetooth) to indicate the engine temperature, pressure, acceleration and lap times. The layout, car-races style, will be completely personalized on the iPad screen. This is kind of approach is intended to create a future Nismo car driver community (online). Connecting to internet, the clients can upload their car data and share them on social networks, as Facebook or Twitter; it will be possible to give points to the most skilled pilots and to launch challenges to improve their skills.

Not too bad, right?

That is why Nissan is convinced that Nismo could attract a young and dynamic audience, fitting in the market of the little “peppery”, despite the increased ground clearance than other compact models… We are convinced though that this car is set to carve out a niche for itself, thanks to its great features (all standard equipment) and the best prices for internet access at a great value for money.

Furthermore the car is a all-terrain vehicle, made for off-roads and snow, and it has a trunk and space for 4 passengers, despite its coupé style that could represent less room in the rear.

So hurry up then because not too many Nismo will be available on the Italian market… But this is the price to pay for exclusiveness!
